The fast and flat streets of Columbus, Ohio was the place chosen by Phil to lose his marathon cherry. After completing the Louisville half-marathon in April of this year, it was time to try to step up to the big boys' league and see if he could tough it out at the 26.2 mile distance. Why 26.2 miles? The legend of the marathon stems back to around 500 B.C. (Before Couriers), when the Greeks dispatched a messenger, Philippides, to run from Marathon to Athens to warn of an impending attack. Fast forward to Boston 1897 A.D. (After Delivery-guys) and the first running of something akin to the modern marathon. However, it wasn't until the London Olympics in 1908 that the distance of 26.2 miles was used. This distance, with its crucial 0.2 miles allowed the race to begin at Windsor Castle and end in front of the Royal Box (interpret as necessary....). Eventually, the 26.2 mile distance would become the standard, and that's why Phil ran it in Columbus.

The weather on October 15th was perfect for running. Lining up on the start, waiting for the starters' horn, a huge military plane gave us a wonderful flyby. (Take that Kim Jong-Il: you're not the only one who can show off military might). It would be fair to say that the first 14 miles were fairly comfortable for Phil. But all good things must come to an end. Still running at 3 hour 30 minute pace by the 20 mile marker, but very much into uncharted territory leg-wise, a slow-down was inevitable. After hitting the mythical "wall" at the 21 mile mark and wondering if he'd ever walk again, Phil would go on to finish the race in 3 hours 42 mins 59 seconds. It's fair to say that he's very pleased to post that time for a first marathon. Yes running a marathon is as difficult as it sounds, but often the harder a challenge, the greater the reward. This is certainly true of running a marathon. It may be your legs that carry you to the finish line, but, for Phil, it's impossible to get there without a strong attitude.
