phil’s last cricket match?

Before leaving for a life in the US, Phil had the chance to play one last game of cricket with his Chipping team mates in a friendly "ales" match versus a touring team. Despite playing in the rain, on a Saturday, before opening time, both teams gave their all in a manner vaguely reminiscent of the sport of cricket. In the fairy tale version of this story, Phil scores an undefeated century and takes five wickets for nine runs, his team winning by a country mile. However, this is Chipping we are talking about, and our heroes were thoroughly slaughtered.
Chipping must be given a modicum of credit for remembering to turn up in the first place. That said, no team captained by Jonathan "Kenny" Kenyon ever failed to show for a game promising beers to all dressed in white. In the end, the game provided plenty of after match conversation. Alec dropped a catch (that'll teach him for wearing his reading glasses). David showed him how it was done by taking a great catch at long on, but he does lose style points for closing his eyes. Kenny made a half century. Phil took a few wickets. Kev "iron gloves" smith stopped a few with his legs, but more importantly made 30 with the bat. It was an altogether memorable end to a forgettable cricketing career for Phil.
